He trained in Turin under the guidance of the painter Felice Casorati. His long experience as a graphic artist, which he completed in the 1950s, was of fundamental importance for his artistic activity, based on a rigorous geometrical structure and a careful analysis of the colour values. He was artistic consultant to Italsider, then the largest Italian steel firm, from 1958 to 1965. He took part in the Venice Biennale in 1966. In 1967 his electronic works were on show at the Superlund exhibition curated by Pierre Restany at Lund in Sweden. In 1968 he presented the Carm-o-matic at the Cybernetic Serendipity exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London. In 1973 he created a wholly abstract programme lasting 25 minutes for the Experimental Programmes Service of the RAI (Italian Broadcasting Corporation) and, in the same year, he held seminars on the visual arts at the Rhode Island Institute of Design at Providence in the United States. He has taught at the Accademie di Belle Arti (art colleges) of Macerata and Ravenna. His illustrations for three fairy tales by Umberto Eco (La bomba e il generale, I tre cosmonauti and Gli gnomi di Gnù) are also well known; these have been published in Italy by Bompiani, and in many other countries. The French ministry of education chose them for the libraries and schools of France. The most outstanding retrospective exhibition of his work was staged by the Milan municipality in 1990; this was followed by an important exhibition devoted to him by the city of Budapest at the Royal Palace in 1992. In 1991 he exhibited his works at the Italo-American Museum in San Francisco. In 1996 a book entitled Carmi by Umberto Eco and Duncan Macmillan was published; presented at the Milan Triennale at the end of November, it is an outline of the whole of his career (Edizioni L'Agrifoglio, Milan). In October 1997 a solo exhibition of his work was held at the Musée Municipal in Luxembourg at the invitation of the mayor, during the six-month period when Luxembourg presided over the European Union. In 1998 he had exhibitions at the Galerie Meissner in Hamburg and the Galleria Santo Ficara in Florence. In 1999 he was invited to participate in the 13th Quadriennale d'arte di Roma, which was entitled 'Proiezioni 2000'. In December 1999 he had an exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute in Los Angeles. On 26 May 2000 a solo exhibition was inaugurated at the Chamber of Deputies in the Palazzo Montecitorio in Rome; this was held at the personal invitation of the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Luciano Violante. In September 2000 a retrospective exhibition of his works was held at the Museo Diocesano in Barcelona under the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Parliament and the parliament of Catalonia. The book Eugenio Carmi, by Luciano Caramel and Umberto Eco, was published by Electa, Milan, in Italian and Spanish editions. In January 2001 he was elected a member of the Accademia di San Luca. In September–October 2001 he had a retrospective exhibition in Prague in the chapel of St Charles Borromeo under the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Italian Embassy. In September-October 2002 he had an exhibition at New York University, under the patronage of the Italian Consul General. In December 2003 he had an exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute in Paris, with watercolours, collages and glass works. In December 2003 he was awarded the First National F. Ferrazzi Prize at Sabaudia. In April 2004 Fabbri Editori, Milan, published the book Tre racconti, a new edition in a single volume of the fairy tales by Umberto Eco illustrated by Eugenio Carmi. Also in April 2004 he was awarded the Guglielmo Marconi International Painting, Sculpture and Electronic Art Prize, University of Bologna. In June 2004 he had an exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute in Copenhagen. In October 2004 he had an exhibition at the Galleria Atrium Arte Contemporanea, Lecce. In May–June 2005 he had an exhibition entitled 'Ricordando Archimede' at the Palazzo Trigona-Canicarao, Noto, at the invitation of the City of Noto. In May–June 2006 he had an exhibition at the Frankfurter Westend Galerie, Frankfurt. In May–June 2006 an exhibition of his work entitled 'Astrazione e geometria' was held at the Galleria L'Osanna, Nardò (province of Lecce). In November–December 2006 he had an exhibition entitled 'Come sarebbe bello il mondo' at the Galleria Biasutti & Biasutti, Turin. In 2006 Edizioni Charta, Milan, published the book Eugenio Carmi. Tre miliardi di zeri, by Martina Corgnati. In August 2007 he received the Vela d'Oro Career Award, City of Ravenna. In October–November 2007 he had an exhibition at Global Art Gallery, Acqui Terme. In November–December 2007 he had an exhibitions at the Galleria Ghelfi, Verona, and Galleria La Fortezza, Savona. In December 2007–January 2008 he had an exhibition at the Museo Nazionale di Castel Sant'Angelo, Rome. In April–June 2008 he had an exhibition at the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea Cascina Roma, San Donato Milanese (province of Milan). In August-October 2009 he had a retrospective exhibition at the MAR Museo d'Arte di Ravenna. In October 2009 he had an exhibition at the Galleria Ermione, Genoa. In November-Jenuary 2009 he had an exhibition at the Galleria San Carlo, Milan. In November 2009 he was invited at the Louvre Museum for a celebratory event of "Stripsody" (a book with the recorded voice of Cathy Berberian, images of Eugenio Carmi and text of Umberto Eco, 1966). In May 2010 he had an exhibition at the Auditorium in Milan. In September 2010 he had an exhibition at the Italian Institute of Culture in Los Angeles In June 2011 he was invited to participate in the 54th Venice Biennale, Padiglione Italia and Venice Biennale in Genoa, Palazzo della Meridiana. In December 2011-February 2012 he had an exhibition entitled "Deposito" (Gruppo cooperativo di Boccadasse, an artist collective founded by Eugenio Carmi and Carlo Fedeli in Genoa in the 1963) at the Italian Institute of Culture in Los Angeles. In January - February 2012 he had an exhibition entitled "Pythagoras's Theorem" at the Casa dei Carraresi, Treviso. In March - April 2012 he had an exhibition entitled "Sezione Aurea. L'armonia del Cosmo" at the Museum Il Correggio, Correggio (Reggio Emilia). In May-June 2012 he had an exhibition entitled ""Ragione e Spiritualità. 1,618…" at the Italian Institute of Culture in Stockholm. Important works of his form part of the collections of the Chamber of Deputies and Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome, the Rome Quadriennale and various museums in Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland and the United States. He has participated in the major international biennales of the graphic arts, receiving important awards. He describes himself as an 'image-maker'. Eugenio Carmi nasce a Genova nel 1920.
